Diagnosis

Diagnosis

According to vascular and vein experts in Monmouth County, there are no specific laboratory tests for the diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurysms. There is a range of imaging studies that can be employed together to establish a conclusive diagnosis. These include:

  • Laboratory tests: Our Monmouth County vascular and vein specialist will typically order a complete blood count, kidney and liver function tests
  • Ultrasonography – this is a standard imaging technique for abdominal aortic aneurysms
  • Computed tomography (CT) – a CT scan has a sensitivity of 100% for detecting an abdominal aortic aneurysm and gives more detail than an ultrasonography. It may therefore be ordered following the findings of an ultrasonography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – to allow the imaging of the aorta and compare the findings to those from a CT scan and ultrasonography
  • Angiography – normally used preoperatively
